Notes for ERNST RUDOLPH POPPE:

By Gerald (Jim) Jorstad (Great-Great Grandson of Ernst Rudolf Poppe)

Copied from the book "Poppes" by Jerome L Poppe:

Ernst was born in Hohengrape, Soldrin, Prussia. The Archives of Old Records in Warsaw, Poland has no record of his birth but other sources confirm his birth there. Ernst learned the carpenters trade and worked at it in Prussia for 20 years before serving in the German Army for 4 years during the Polish Revolution of 1848.

Ernst was married in Kollin, Bradenburg Province, Prussia November 23, 1854 to Louise Lau, daughter of Friedrich and Susan Wilhelmina Lau. Louise was born in Prussia August 13, 1836. Her father was born in Prussia May 12, 1812 and died in Poole, Perth County, Ontario, Canada February 28, 1900. Her mother was born in Prussia February 12, 1818 and died in Poole December 20, 1878. Both parents are buried in Poole and were members of the Lutheran Church.

In 1857, Ernst, Louise and son Gustav (my Great-Grandfather) left Prussia. The following is an unverified account from family sources giving the reason for Ernst to leave Prussia:     "The Prussian government had thought that Ernst and his associates were plotting to kill the Kaiser. He left Prussia for fear of his and his family's lives. They arrived in Toronto,Ontario, Canada approximately about 1860 after first moving to Denmark, then Sweden."    They moved from Toronto and settled in the town of Poole, Ontario, Canada where he worked as a carpenter and a cabinet maker. In 1865 he purchased from the British Crown 5 acres of land in Poole, bordered by Louise, Albert, Augusta, and Alfred Streets.

Louise died of TB in Poole at the age of 29. She is buried in a small cemetery located behind a house owned by a British couple which had been abandoned  when it was visited in 1976. The stones had been pulled up and stacked in piles. Overgrown with trees and shrubs, part of had been cleared and plowed for farmland. This cemetery was close to the church cemetery where her mother and father were buried. When Louise died, her parents helped Ernst taking care of his children.

Ernst re-married October 8, 1866 Barbara Elizabeth Hassenpflug, a daughter of Johann Von Hassenpflug, born in Hessia, Prussia. Barbara spoke high German while Ernst spoke low German.

Barbara Elizabeth left Prussia following her boyfriend to Canada. She became sick during the boat trip and found that she was pregnant. Her luggage, which contained her boyfriends address in Canada was lost and upon arriving in Canada found herself stranded. A German couple took her in and introduced her to Ernst and explained the dilemma to him. Ernst agreed to be father to her unborn child (William) if she would be a mother to his five small children. This is one version of how Ernst and Elizabeth were introduced. The other version is that Barbara was already married to a person with the name of Schutz. Her and her husband got separated and she moved in with some German friends whom she knew from Prussia. Since she was pregnant and not knowing that her husband would ever return, she agreed to marry Ernst so that her child would have a father.

In 1874 Ernst and family moved to to the U S entering at Detroit. He then traveled to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin living there for 3 months while his son Charles was born. He found the cost of land much more expensive than what he had thought, so in August of that same year moved to Clark County, where the cost was cheaper. He settled in the town of Greenwood until October 1874 when he moved to a farm of 320 acres west of the town of Longwood. He homesteaded 140 of these acres. Joe Gibson was his nearest neighbor who lived 3 miles away and the Black River flowed near his house. Besides farming, Ernst worked as a carpenter building homes, barns, banks, schools, and office buildings in the area. Ernst built a house on his homestead where he retired, later selling his farm and living in a smaller house on his son Charles's farm near the town of Longwood.

Barbara Elizabeth died February 21, 1929 in Longwood Township. Barbara was buried next to Ernst in the Reseburg Cemetery. The stones of Ernst and Barbara are incorrectly marked. They show for Ernst: b. 1830 d. 1913, and for Barbara: b. 1846 d. 1929. Two of their children, Eduard and Emielge are buried next to them and their stones are written in German.

(Photos were taken of these grave stones by Jim Jorstad when attending a Poppe Family Reunion in 1997 at Greenwood, Wi)

Ernst served 4 years as a member of the Town Board, several years as a member of the School Board and Treasurer. He was a member of the Lutheran Church.

Ernst died in his sleep of 83 years old, and is buried in the Reseburg Cemetery.

Notes for GUSTAV KARL (JOHN) POPPE:

Gustav was born in Hohengrape, Soldin, Prussia August 31, 1855. The  archives of old records in Warsaw, Poland could not find no record of his birth there, but other sources verify his birth there. He is the eldest child of Ernst Rudolph and Louise (Lau) Poppe. The name "Gustav" in German is equivalent to the name "George" in English, but he was commonly known as "John" and no one seems to know why.

John's parents moved to Poole when he was very young. He grew up and attended the area school in Poole. The family trips to the cities of Stratford, Millbank, and Kitchener he enjoyed. When 10 years old his mother died and he was cared for by his grandparents, the Lau's, until his father re-married. Barbara Elizabeth, his step-mother tried to replace his mother but Gustav could not accept her. She was only 21 years old and he was 11. The two had several conflicts but eventually grew to respect each other. In May 1874, when he was 19 years old, his father, step-mother, and family moved to the United States and settled in what at that time was the south half of Hixin Township, Clark County, Wisconsin (now known as Longwood Township) . Gustav helped his father clear the land and homestead. In the winters he would work as a lumberjack and log driver which he continued in his manhood and married life until deciding that farming was more his life.

Gustav was married in Hixon Township Clark County, Wisconsin October 8, 1879 to Augusta Emile Kotzer, a daughter of Wilhelm and Wilhelmine (Lamprecht) Kotzer. Augusta's father had a 120 acre farm that bordered Gustav's and Ernst Rudolf's land in section 18 of Longwood Township and this is where they were married. They were married by the reformed Dutch ceremony and their witnesses were Gottfried and Eva Braun.

Gustav purchased an 113 acre farm in Longwood Township in 1879. The farm was  located about 3 miles west of the Town of Longwood. In 1893 Gustav had 160 acres that he farmed until his sons, Edward and George took over for him. He had built a large modern two story house on his land (Poppe Corner) which was partially standing until 1977 when it was destroyed by fire. The house has several pine trees surrounding it, which he and his family had planted, along with roses and other flowers. The family spent a lot time on the front porch and yard enjoying the outside.

Gustav was a quiet man, well liked and respected. He was approximately 5' 8" tall and had a fair complexion. He spoke more German than English as he preferred speaking German more than English. Gustav was affiliated with the democratic party and a member of the Lutheran Church. He also was a hand in the construction of the "Poppe School" and its formation.

As written by Harvey Edward Jorstad, a grandson of Gustav and Augusta, on

August 15, 1979:  I am their grandson and proud of it. They lived on a farm 3 miles west of Longwood. I miss them all very much, and also Gustav (John) Poppe's brother Ernst's family who lived 1/4 mile north.

Ernst Poppe reared a large family also, and I lived just 1 mile from them. I was part of this family in a way of speaking. They had one son named "Robert" who was my idol and we were together most of the time, until Robert reached the age of 18.

(Upon questioning Harvey why the age 18, he being 4 years younger, he said: Well, you know Robert started hanging out with that other crowd, going to dances with those girls and such, and it sure did hurt my feelings.)

Gustav died February 3, 1940 while visiting his daughter Adelia. He died in Iron Range Township, Itasca County, Minnesota at the age of 84 years, 5 months, and 3 days. He was brought back home and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Withee, Wisconsin.

The Riverside Cemetery is located on old State Highway 29 (now Clark County Road X ) about 2 miles south of the town of Withee. It is a large cemetery and is very well kept up.

Notes for AUGUSTA EMILE KOTZER:

Augusta Emile (Kotzer) Poppe, was the daughter of Wilhelm and Wilhelmine (Lamprecht) Kotzer. Augusta's father had a 120 acre farm that bordered Gustav's and Ernst Rudolph's land in section 18 of Hixon Township and this is where Augusta and Gustav were married. They were married by the reformed Dutch ceremony and their witnesses were Gottfried and Eva Braun.

Augusta was born in Prussia December 20, 1852 and died November 14, 1927 in Longwood Township, Clark County, Wisconsin. She was buried next to Gustav in the Riverside Cemetery, about 2 miles south of the town of Withee.

When William was 7 years old his parents left Poole and settled on a farm 3 miles west of Longwood, Clark County, Wisconsin.

She was affiliated with the Democratic Party and the First Congregational Church of Longwood.

She was married in Longwood Township, Clark County, Wisconsin June 15, 1887 to Olaf Johnson Mellon, a son of Elvern and Julia Malen. Olaf was born in LaCrosse County, Wis. September 1868. His parents were both from Norway.

Olaf disappeared into the woods between 1900 and 1905, while living in Grand Rapids. Whether he got lost, indians got him, or he just didn't want to be found, nobody knows. An unverified family source said "Olaf just left home that day with a hammock into the woods for some peace and quiet".
